One of the more difficult things to plan in a wedding party is the mother of the bride outfit. Some weddings tend to make the decision of the mother of the bride outfit as important as the bride’s dress, while other mothers choose to buy their outfit completely separate, and very different from any of the wedding planning.
The most popular choice for the mother of the bride to wear at her daughter’s wedding is a dress. A dress’s style will depend on the wedding itself, but the mother of the bride outfit usually will reflect a certain level of sophistication.
Currently it’s a popular trend in weddings to match the mother’s outfit to the overall color scheme of the bridal party. Sometimes the mother of the bride outfit will be the same color as the bridesmaid dresses, while other times the mother of the bride outfit will be the same color as the bride’s flowers. Another popular trend today is to not match the color at all to the wedding, and instead make a bold statement outside of it, so that the mother will stand out as a very special participant in all of the festivities.
The mother of the bride should always feel free to choose the sleeve length that she is comfortable with. If she has toned arms she doesn’t need to cover up her arms; she can feel free to bare them, particularly if the bride is wearing a strapless gown.

Congratulations! You’re now the mother of the bride! You now have a supporting role to play in what will be one of the biggest events of your daughter’s life! So now what? If you’re like most women, you’re probably pouring through lots of information on dresses for mother of the bride!
As with nearly every aspect of planning a wedding, there are traditions that some couples wish to follow while others they would prefer to ignore. While you’re deciding on a gown, you will probably want to discuss a few things with your daughter.
When you’re choosing a color, there are a few things to consider. Most people feel that the mother of the bride dress shouldn’t be either white or black. White is traditionally reserved for only the bride to wear on her wedding day. The idea against wearing black goes back to when mothers used to signal their unhappiness at their daughter’s wedding by wearing a black dress, as if they were in mourning. While that’s a little extreme today, most mothers still probably won’t want to wear a black dress.
If your daughter is having a black and white wedding, then she might actually prefer that you wear a black dress, so make sure that you know what the colors of her bridesmaid’s dresses are!

Once upon a time the mother of the bride nearly always wore a pale pink or pale blue chiffon dress, with a big corsage on the left shoulder. Even though in reality she was very stylish, etiquette dictated that on her daughter’s wedding day, she would look slightly frumpy. Thank goodness that’s all changed!
Today’s mother of bride dresses are beautiful and elegant, and even can be quite chic and up to date. Many designers have turned their attention to not only designing gorgeous wedding gowns and bridesmaids gowns, but also outfitting the MOB.
Today it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a strapless gown. Many moms are very fit and have beautiful toned arms – so you should show them off! If the ceremony is a religious ceremony, you can add a simple bolero or shawl during the service, then remove it for the reception.
Although you still want to keep your accessories fairly simple, you can pull your hair into an elegant updo and fasten it with a sparkling brooch or hairpin. You don’t have to limit yourself to a small strand of pearls, either. If you do want to wear pearls, then by all means go right ahead, but feel free to treat yourself to a dramatic multi-strand set of pearls.

Without a doubt, trying to coordinate the wedding gown, the bridesmaid dresses and the mother of bride dresses is one big stress headache for some families. Nothing could be worse than having the bride’s gown upstaged by her own mother’s dress!
It can be a complex issue deciding on the perfect style and color that’s going to coordinate with the other members of the wedding party. The mother of the bride is going to want to shine in her own way, and look her absolute best. She also wants to make sure that no attention is taken away from her daughter on her special day.
A lot of moms want to get a beautiful gown in a brilliant color, but that has the potential to pull too much attention from the rest of the wedding party in photos. If the bridesmaids are wearing lavender, you wouldn’t want your dress to be crimson red! I’m not saying that your dress needs to be beige, or gray, but a beautiful complimenting color that’s going to look fantastic in those wedding photos!
You also have to carefully consider the lines of the dress. The most beautiful mother of bride dresses are those with very simple, classic lines. You should try to choose a dress that’s a perfect representation of understated elegance, and keep away from too many accessories.
